The Overthinker’s Scorecard: street food in Thailand
Street food and I got off to a cautious start.
It wasn’t the food that worried me. In fact, most of it looked far more appealing than the dishes being served in nearby restaurants. It was everything else my brain decided to focus on.
How long had that chicken been sitting there? Was that ice made with filtered water? What if I picked the one food stall everyone else instinctively knew to avoid? What was that skinned alligator doing there?
Meanwhile, the locals seemed blissfully unconcerned. They were queuing patiently, chatting to the vendors, ordering without hesitation and happily sitting down on tiny plastic stools. It slowly dawned on me that they probably knew something I didn’t.
The turning point came when I stopped looking for the “safest-looking” stall and started looking for the busiest one instead. A queue usually meant fresh food, a high turnover and a vendor who clearly had a good reputation. Watching my meal being cooked to order also did wonders for my peace of mind.
Was there still a small voice in my head wondering whether this particular meal might be the one that ruined my holiday? Of course.
Did it? Not once.
Instead, some of my favourite meals came from places with handwritten menus, mismatched plastic chairs and cooks who had clearly perfected the same handful of dishes over many years. The food was fresh, full of flavour and often considerably cheaper than a restaurant around the corner.
It turns out my biggest mistake wasn’t eating street food. It was almost missing out because I’d overthought it.
The Overthinker’s Scorecard
Food: ★★★★★
Some of the best meals of the trip.
Overthinking level: ★★★★★
My brain was far less convinced than my taste buds.
Expectations vs. Reality: ★★★★★
Expected: endless stomach problems.
Reality: fantastic food, generous portions and not a single regret.
Would Future Alexandra do it again? ★★★★★
Absolutely. I’d probably seek out street food before looking for a restaurant.
One thing I’d tell a first-timer:
Follow the locals. Choose a busy stall where the food is cooked fresh in front of you, order something popular and don’t let your imagination spoil what might become one of the best meals of your trip.
